Figtree Coverlet - 200 Years Old

1816 Coverlet

This coverlet was made in Preston, New York, in November, 1816, by Almira Mason.
It was bought by the present owner from the estate of the descendants of the maker.
It is made of two pieces of 34" wide fabric and one piece of 16".

The appliqués are from one fabric that, today, looks green and brown.

4 The banner reads:
"THE BARREN FIGTREE SPARED AT THE REQUEST OF THE DRESSER"

5 The lettering is well spaced and neatly done with four stitches:
 –  \
to make a star.

6The stitches are carefully done.

7As you can see on the back, it is very neat.

 8Alas, there is some discoloration.
9This corner is stained.

10And there are some holes in the border fringe.

11And a couple of small worn spots or holes.

12In at least one area, the appliqué is not stitched.
