Rainbow and Strawberries

This is a terribly wet year.
We got a lot of rain:
   May      6.1 inches
June   11.6 inch
       July     6.25 inches

But tonight the sun came out and we got a double rainbow.

Magical.

We are getting fewer berries than last year, but they are wonderful.

These are strawberries from three-year-old plants -
Mara des Bois strawberries.

Can She Bake a Cherry Pie?

Probably not - yet.

We ate two and have these in the fridge waiting for more.
It will probably have to be a tart. . .
a tiny tart.

These are the first Northstar cherries.

5 Leaf Clover

Today D brought me a Five Leaf Clover!

That's supposed to be even luckier than a four-leaf clover!
We'll see. . .

What a difference!

We have tied our previous record of one nice day in a row.  Time to put the chicks into the sun.

The pullets are gawky now.
Tonight they will sleep in their cage in the coop with the big ones.

Tommy and the Pullets

It has stopped raining.
Time to give the pullets a taste of the outdoors.

Tommy is fascinated.

He checks them all over.

Once he's sure they are safe, he relaxes a bit.

"See, I'm doing my job!"
They're fine.

"You can go weed. . . I'll keep an eye on them."

Barred Rock Chicks with Buffy Mother

We went to Frog Pond today and purchased five Barred Rock pullets.

We are hoping that Buffy #2 will adopt them.
She had been sitting on eggs with Buffy #1.
#1 did hatch two chicks.

We put these new babies in a cage near the moms.
#1 was not at all interested, since she had her own beautiful babies.

#2 seems interested.
When they were in the cage, she brought them food and dropped it through the bars.
So we released them.

We'll see. . .

First chick

The first chick appeared under the old mama today.

She is still sitting on eggs, so perhaps there will be more.
